Session Topic: From Bowel to Bowman’s capsule: The gut-renal axis and role of the microbiome

Topic Synopsis:
The role of the gut microbiome and its influence on systemic health is a growing research field in both human and veterinary medicine. This talk will delve into the interconnected relationship between the gastrointestinal microbiome and kidney function (known as the gut-renal axis) in companion animals. We will present pertinent research on how changes to the gastrointestinal microbiome might contribute to the progression of chronic kidney disease and how uremic toxins produced by the gastrointestinal tract may alter renal function. Potential therapeutic targets and strategies will also be discussed.
